Nathan gazed across the table at O’Dell. She’d been quiet for at least five minutes, not that he was complaining.

He regretted how the morning had started out so poorly. The broken parts of her were evident, the loss of belief in all that was good and decent, of honest feelings sincerely expressed, of a man’s love for a woman.

His body burned with fever whenever she was near. Even after they’d shared each other’s bodies, he was thirsty for another taste. Making love to O’Dell had only been the start.

He wanted more. And he didn’t know how to act around her, or what to say to make that clear. When he’d woken, he could tell she was in a bristly mood already, maybe disappointed in the night they’d shared, though she’d plainly told him the opposite. But then she’d ridden off in a huff. What was he supposed to do with that?

Women were an altogether different sort of being, and he didn’t feel completely capable of understanding just what was expected of him.

Angelina returned with two plates filled with her grandma’s cooking.

“Look at this food.” O’Dell rubbed her hands together. “It looks…”

“Sumptuous.”

She threw back her head and laughed, the tinkling sound pulling a smile from him. Lord but he liked hearing her laugh.

“Seems the cowboy has a few fancy words, too. How long has it been since you’ve eaten a home-cooked meal?” she asked.

“Been a while.” He forked a chunk of roasted prairie hen into his mouth, his mood souring. The thought of home cooking reminded him of Maria and John.

“No offense to your cooking,” O’Dell said around a bite, “but this food is delicious.”

“No offense taken.”

As she chewed her food, she watched him with those amber eyes.

Where he’d really like to be right now was between the sheets with this sensuous flame-haired woman. However, Nathan had vowed to himself he wouldn’t ask for her favors because she would give them, but for all the wrong reasons.

Their meal grew quiet as they ate, each of them lost in their own thoughts.

She pushed her plate to the side and circled her lips with her kerchief. “While you’re finishing, I’m going to wander over to the saloon.”

He stopped with his fork halfway to his mouth. “What do you want to go and do that for?”

“Maybe the men over there know something about Carlton and his men. No place better than a saloon for gossip.”

He was sure they didn’t need to know anything more than Henry Bushnell had told them. “There’s no need.”

“How do you know? Maybe I can find out something important.”

He stuffed his mouth, chewed and swallowed. “Why would those boys over at the saloon tell you what Blakeley’s up to?”

She unbuttoned the top button of her shirt, showing ample cleavage. “Why do you think?”

He stabbed at another piece of meat, feeling anger and jealousy rise up inside him. “I think I was foolish to ask.”

“I’m happy we are beginning to understand each other better.”

He tore off a piece of flour tortilla. There was no understanding between them at all.
